First planted by founder and owner, Nick Holmes, over 30 years ago, Shottesbrooke takes its name from an estate in Berkshire, England, where Nick’s grandfather was the parish vicar from 1905 to 1926. Today Shottesbrooke is proudly an estate-grown, family-owned boutique wine enterprise.

Story about: Hamish Maguire, Winemaker, McLaren Vale

Hamish Maguire:  Hamish Maguire knows a thing or two about wine. As a child, he was practically raised amongst the vineyards by his step-father, Shottesbrooke founder, Nick Holmes.

A self-described ‘outdoorsy lad’ with a keen love of surfing, fishing and running, Hamish always knew he wanted a job working outside in the elements.

Growing up in McLaren Vale, he didn’t fully appreciate what his home town had to offer until a stint of travelling in his twenties. Working in the wineries and vineyards of France and Spain solidified his passion for the beauty and romance of winemaking, as well as some of the finer, more technical elements of the job.

And so the McLaren Vale lifestyle drew him home, and upon his return Hamish settled back into life at Shottesbrooke, where he is now the Winemaker and General Manager. And despite proudly leading the business into a new era, you’ll still find him quietly slipping away from the lab whenever the surf is up…
